The coin was only released for circulation in a handful of banks in Denver and Philadelphia. The 1972 Eisenhower Dollar was struck without the mint mark, which led to its nickname, the “No Mint Mark Dollar”. The coin was introduced in response to public outcry following the release of the Eisenhower dollar coin in 1971, which did not contain any precious metal. The 1972 Eisenhower Dollar was the first dollar coin issued by the United States Mint after the silver dollar was suspended in 1965.
